There’s a moment I often see when I start working with a founder, and it usually shows up in small ways - an apology for a slow reply, a comment about how they need to “get more organised”, or a frustration with themselves for not being able to stay on top of everything as easily as they think they should.
They assume the problem is them, that somewhere along the way, they’ve become less disciplined, less focused, or less capable than they used to be.
But most of the time, that really isn’t true.
What’s changed isn’t how capable they are, it’s their capacity. As a business grows, so does all of the weight that comes with it. More decisions to make, more people relying on you, and more moving parts that live entirely in your head.
Even when you’re not actually working, part of your mind is still holding it all - keeping track of what needs to happen, remembering what hasn’t been finished yet, and on top of all of that is the knowledge that if you don’t think about it, no one else will.
From the outside, it can look like disorganisation, but from the inside, it’s something very different. It’s usually the result of caring about what you’ve built, and holding more of it than one person was ever meant to alone.
A lot of business owners blame themselves for this, and assume that they just need to try harder, be better, or become a more organised version of themselves. But trying to become someone else just adds to the pressure, the real change comes from no longer carrying everything by yourself.
Creating structures that hold things outside of your head, and having the right support in place, will allow you room to breathe as your business grows and evolves.
You were never meant to be the one holding everything, and when that weight gets lifted, things will start to feel clearer, and you will have space to think again.
If this feels like something you need support with, I’m here.
